A common question we get at MCOFFEE is whether to go with a single origin or a blend and what's the difference? It's a great question — and the honest answer is that both have a place depending on what you're looking for in your cup.
Here's everything you need to know to make the right choice.
What is a single origin coffee?
A single origin coffee comes from one specific country, region, farm or cooperative. The name tells you exactly where the beans came from — Ethiopia Chelbesa, Brazil Senel Campos, Panama Geisha — and the flavour profile reflects the unique conditions of that place. Soil, altitude, climate and processing method all leave their mark on the cup.
Single origins are prized for their clarity and distinctiveness. When you drink a well-roasted single origin you're tasting something specific — a place, a season, a farmer's work. Ethiopian coffees are typically bright and fruity with floral notes. Brazilians tend to be low-acid, nutty and chocolatey. Central Americans often sit in between — balanced, sweet and clean.
The trade-off is consistency. Because single origins reflect a specific harvest, they change seasonally. A coffee you loved last year may taste slightly different this year depending on the harvest conditions.
Our single origins are distinguished by our 'single origin' circle on our packaging.
What is a coffee blend?
A blend combines beans from multiple origins, selected and proportioned by a roaster to achieve a specific flavour profile. At MCOFFEE we craft our blends to be consistent year-round — if the crop from one origin changes, we adjust the recipe to maintain the same result in the cup.
Blends are designed with a specific purpose in mind. Our espresso blends are built to perform through milk, hold up under pressure in an espresso machine, and deliver a consistent result every time you pull a shot. That balance of body, sweetness and crema is harder to achieve reliably with a single origin.
Our blends are distinguished by our 'blend' symbol on our packaging.
Single origin vs blend — key differences
Flavour — single origins tend to be more distinctive and complex. Blends are crafted for balance and consistency. Neither is better — they're just different.
Consistency — Single origins reflect their season and are more consistent when brewing a particular bag. Single origins do vary across seasons.
Ease of use — blends are generally more forgiving to dial in because they are usually roasted and developed a little more, especially for espresso. Single origins — particularly lighter roasts — require more attention and adjustment.
Milk drinks vs black coffee — blends are typically designed to cut through milk in flat whites and lattes. Single origins often shine brightest as black coffee — pour over, filter or black espresso — where their character can be fully appreciated.
Traceability — single origins offer full transparency about where your coffee came from. If that matters to you — and it should — single origins make it easy to support specific farmers and regions.
Which MCOFFEE coffees to try
For blends:
- Meebz Blend — our most popular everyday espresso. Balanced, consistent and brilliant through milk
- Premium Blend — more complexity and depth for those who want a more characterful cup
- Riviera — bold, full-bodied and intense for those who drink strong coffee
For single origins:
- Brazil Dark — the easiest single origin to start with. Low acid, full body, chocolatey and forgiving to dial in
- Ethiopia Chelbesa — bright, fruity and floral. Best enjoyed as a pour over or black espresso
- Colombia Organic — a beautiful sweet, delicate and flavoursome coffee perfect for soft brewing methods.
So which should you choose?
If you're new to specialty coffee or drink mostly milk-based espresso drinks — start with a blend. The Meebz Blend or Premium Blend will give you great results consistently without requiring constant adjustment.
If you're curious, drink a lot of black coffee, or want to explore what coffee can really taste like — try a single origin. The Brazil Dark is the ideal starting point. It has the approachability of a blend with the clarity of a single origin.
The good news is you don't have to choose one or the other. Most coffee lovers keep a blend for their morning flat white and a single origin for a slower weekend pour over. MCOFFEE roasts daily in small batches so everything arrives fresh — browse our full range and find your perfect match.
